Malika Ayane

Music fans from all around Europe & probably not only, must have viewed the 5-day long San Remo Song Festival in Italy. I followed most of it and apart from seeing a ravishing show by the great Dita Von Teese on day one, right after midnight, I fell in love with a lot of the music which made it to the finals.

One of the most hear-rending songs was by the very young & talented
Malika Ayane who is of Italian/Moroccan origins.

Here is the link to a video of the song she sang....

Even if you don't understand Italian, you'll enjoy soaring on the melody aboard Malika's velvety voice........ What do you think?

Tuesday Giveaway no.2

Today is the last Tuesday of February and here I am ready to launch Fairy Filigree's second giveaway, freebie, complimentary present, call it what you will.

Tuesday is a day which is neither here nor there, it's not mid-week and it's not anywhere near a weekend, I thought I'd cheer you up on Tuesdays and will present a giveaway on whichever Tuesday in the month I find something to excite your fancy.

This time round, I am offering up for grabs, this sweet and dainty silvertone ankle chain. It comes with the sweetest little heart charm, a remembering of Valentine Day which makes February so special and a hint of days to come, when we can all hopefully once again enjoy barefoot walking.....

All you have to do to be eligible is to start following my blog and add it to your list of favourite blogs. Remember to send me the name, email address and URL of your blog if you have one too. Will make my pick out of the bag on Monday, so by next Tuesday you'll all know who won.... Have a lovely Tuesday.

Buttons

I had bought this old plastic bag full of buttons a couple years ago from a jumble sale and just shoved it in with my other linens and haberdashery stuff and forgot all about them. Last Sunday afternoon, was alone at home and pottering around the kitchen when I remembered these buttons. Out came the bag and this is what I found.....

I had quite forgotten just how many different buttons there were, mostly large vintage coat buttons you know.
So I decided to use my free time to sort them out neatly and here is what I did....

The biggest set of buttons were the ones in the upper right hand - cute flat striped buttons in red, white and blue....

I had quite a lot of fun with these armies of buttons....

I only had two of each of these - perfect  for adding on to old vintage jackets that only tie up with a couple of large buttons like these.....
and then I got needle and thread and started grouping the rest all together in sets. Little groups of buttons all tied together for easy finding...

And then there were the tiny buttons on the side...

Now they're all happily organised and back into my big box of buttons with the rest of my collection. Wonder what I should do with them... any ideas?

Valentine Hearts

Been rummaging through the web in search of perfect little charms and trinkets to buy for St Valentine's.
I found out this cute little heart ............
which is handmade of sterling silver Maltese filigree. This is sold online by Island Filigree which sells authentic handmade Maltese filigree made on the Mediterranean island of Malta.

Check out more HERE where you'll also find these charming Arrows left behind by Cupid and turned into unique earrings ......

Many artists utilise these charms and re-compose new jewellery from unwanted pieces or from odds and ends picked up from thrift stores, estate sales, jumble sales etc. Old necklaces, single earrings, broken bracelets... everything can have a second life. If you've ever come across anything which you fancied, even if a tiny glass bead or a little dainty charm, and wondered whether you should pick it up and own it but declined because you figured out it wouldn't be something you'd use after all, then you very obviously haven't met  Cindy of CL Designs, nor have you seen these marvels of hers....

Fairy tales

True to this blog's name, anything linked with fairies is a favourite. So here they are....

The young artist Minna Havas has come up with some exceptionally delicately designed stamps for Finland's posti. Issued on January 25, 2010, these are dedicated with Valentine's Day in mind.

The image above shows what philatelists (that's people collecting stamps) call a Miniature Sheet as it includes all the stamps in a set, presented on one purposely designed sheet. This would be a highly collectible sheet especially as the design so prettily painted and very artistic, and also because fairies are not very commonly found on stamps!

Heart Fairy

Flower Fairy

 Butterfly Fairy

Star Fairy

Violin Fairy

Why would Valentine's Day be celebrated on Finnish stamps? Because apparently after Christmas, Valentine's Day is the second most popular postcard season in Finland. Finns send out some five million Valentine's Day cards!!! That makes Finland post offices pretty busy! Does anybody living in Finland read this blog?
